How to Astral Project
Would you like to learn how to astral project? You've come to the right place! Astral projection, sometimes also called an out of body experience or Remote Viewing, is the experience of appearing to travel outside of your body. This experience can have many useful purposes for the student of witchcraft, and can be incorporated into your spells or used for divination magic.
First of all, if you are going to learn how to Astral Project we first of all must examine exactly what astral projection or an out of body experience is. To do this we must travel right back and understand a little about the philosophies of Ancient Cultures, and the practises of Yoga and Meditation.
Many Ancient Cultures have a tradition of believing in the existence of etheric energy bodies. This means that the physical human body which we have is just one of a collection of entities joined together to form our (fabulous!) pan dimensional soul. There are many forms of these beliefs encompassing a variety of philosophies and religions. To take just a few examples, in the branch of Yoga called the Kundalini Yoga the existence of ten etheric energy bodies is acknowledged, and in ancient Egyptian theology it was held that the physical body was a mere temporary dwelling place for the Ka, the human life force, and Ba, the Soul. In Shamanism it is a long accepted belief dating back thousands of years, that the Shaman is able to astral project - leaving their body at will, sometimes with the help of mind altering herbs, to converse with spirits and the ancestors.
These cultural ideas and philosophies differ from each other in many small details, but the fascinating thing is that they all share a common and important thread - the idea that it is possible for the etheric energy layers making up a complete human to be separated, either forcibly or by a force of will, causing an astral projection or out of body experience.
Astral Projection - A sometimes Divisive Subject
What exactly is Astral Projection?
Any student who wants to know how to astral project is going to want to know exactly what it is that they are doing! Where is the soul or consciousness going to when an astral projection takes place? This is important to consider before you start; but don't worry if you're still not sure, as philosophers have argued about it for centuries!
There are two main theories surrounding astral projection or out of body experience. These two main theories can be summed up as The Phasing Model and The Mystical Model - and they deal with the idea of whether astral projection is a real actual journey which is undertaken by the person, or simply an inner journey through different phases of consciousness.
To sum up, The Phasing Model, which was put forward by Robert Monroe describes an astral projection as a passing (phasing) through into another plane of consciousness. Much like a radio they tune in to a different channel. This is an idea which is linked to the traditional philosophy that external reality does not exist but is instead created by thought or consciousness.
The Mystical Model, on the other hand, incorporates many individual and unique belief systems, however the one thing which links these belief systems together is the idea that astral projection is a real journey of the human consciousness which takes place outside of the physical body. The consciousness or spirit is carried outside of the body and travels by means of an etheric or "energy" body.
Whichever model you favour, as everyone who has ever successfully astral projected will agree, the journey is both an exciting and enlightening one!
Is Astral Projection Dangerous?
Popular culture is often quick to label the unknown or any unexplained phenomenon which goes against societal norms as dangerous. To this end, you may have heard horror stories about astral projection such as that it is a risk to the Projectors life, or that it is somehow possible to become permanently detached from your body and die, or even, more mysteriously, that you can tragically become lost in the spirit realms and forget about your body. Wandering, presumably, forever…Sob! (Forgetting where your body is would be like forgetting where you live when you go on holiday - it just ain't happening buster!)
It's all rather romantic, but I believe that none of these tales are true. In fact they are just a knee jerk reaction by the uninformed and superstitious masses. Ignore it, and go your merry way, practising astral projection to your hearts content!
Like any other meditational technique or process, it is always advisable to choose to practise astral projection in a peaceful, quiet place where you will not be disturbed. This is simply to prevent you from being rudely or quickly awakened by others when you are deep in a relaxed mental state; which is never a pleasant experience and could make you nervous or stressed by triggering your fight or flight response.
How to Astral Project safely
As discussed previously, Astral Projections are not, in my humble opinion, physically dangerous in any shape or form - and beyond the advice given about seeking a quiet and peaceful place to do it in, I've nothing more to add myself on the subject of safety.
However, in the spirit of open mindedness, I will pass on a little advice which others have given. Just in case you're still not quite comfortable with such a happy go lucky approach to the only partially understood art of astral projection!
Some tips for super safe Astral Projection:
1) Remember, you will be travelling away from your body, or deep within your sub conscious mind, depending on your beliefs. You could be slightly harder to waken than normal - so do make sure that your are in a safe comfortable place to start with. Don't attempt this in a public area or anywhere with any kind of chance of sudden physical danger of any kind. Make sure pertinent appliances are turned off etc.
2) This is so obvious, but as with any meditational technique, there is a chance that you could actually fall asleep! Don't chew gum or suck sweets or do anything at the same time that you wouldn't be comfortable doing asleep. Take off contact lenses or tight restrictive clothes/jewellery of if you wear them.
3) I'm not even going to entertain the idea personally that it is possible for Daemons and so on to possess a healthy minded individual, or indeed that they even necessarily exist - but if you are anxious and you want to be 100% sure that you would be protected from any unknown negative influences, cover yourself mentally with a bright protective light before you begin, say a blessing, or cast a protective circle.
If there were indeed such base entities as Daemons or evil spirits then they would operate on a much lower level - your will and might as a human being and magical practitioner is incredible - believe it!
4) If in doubt, stop and regroup. Magical powers won't be forced. Try again later if appropriate when you are recharged or in a better frame of mind. Everyone is different and who am I to tell you that astral projection is safe if it does not suit your particular circumstances or life path.
5) A note on drugs, depression and other mental health conditions and astral projection: Many people with any kind of problems in this area would probably benefit greatly from meditational energy techniques such as astral projection. However there are always exceptions - if you are in a very dark place then you may find that negativity clouds your inner world to a disturbing degree, and visualisations should be avoided temporarily.
You can overcome this, purging these feelings and reigniting your mind with light, love and positivity. Astral Projection and other more advanced psychic techniques may not be the best or easiest place for you to start in this instance though. Perhaps try Quantum Energy Magic instead.
How To Astral Project
Here is a description of the seven steps to Astral projection, as set forward by Bob Monroe, who is a founder of a leading research organisation into the powers of human consciousness called The Monroe Institute:
The 7 Steps to a successful Astral Projection
1) Relax your body completely. Relax your mind.
2) Allow yourself to relax so much that you enter a "hypnagogic state". This is basically a term for being half asleep! You want to be incredibly relaxed (not ACTUALLY asleep though…!)
3) Fall deeper into this relaxed state. Concentrate on your mind and not your body. Try to be so relaxed that you are unaware of your physical body.
4) Concentrate only on the natural vibration of your environment, of your being. Try to cut out any unbidden trivial outside thoughts that may occur to you.
- 5) Imagine the vibration of the world around you and feel it enveloping your physical body. This is to try to gently jolt the etheric body out of your physical body.
- 6) Now focus your thought on slowly and effortlessly lifting this etheric/spirit body out of your physical one. Start with your limbs and then your torso, one after the other ideally.
- 7) Step 7 is known as "lifting out" - this is when you concentrate on gently drifting out of your physical self.
- If you have followed these steps correctly you should note all of the sensations that you feel and see, everything is important. Some people begin to see impressions and images immediately - for others it takes more practise to perfect the art of relaxation. Don't give up - it's worth it!
Is there any solid scientific evidence that Astral Projection or out of body experience is real?
Yes there is. The CIA took the subject seriously enough in the 1970's to conduct in depth studies in to it, in the hope that it could be useful for information and military reconnaissance. You can read more about this online if you look up declassified CIA files, specifically Operation Stargate.
Some success was had in locating Cold War Bunkers etc. but eventually it was deemed to be a little too unpredictable for military use (or so they say). The evidence for it being a genuine phenomenum is there however, in both the results and in the fact that a high level government department such as the CIA was prepared to finance it in the first place. It's real, and it's worth practising. You won't always get it right - but you WILL see significant results in a regular basis.
