- How to use common semi precious stones and crystals to cast powerful spells
Stones and crystals have long been associated with magical work, being used by witches and wizards through the ages to channel useful energies.
The earth produces a huge variety of beautiful crystals of all colours, sizes,and shapes. They are effective and vital forces to use in your spell casting, possessing both the energies of different colours on the colour spectrum and also being vessels of the earths potent energy; created as they are by massive ancient geological forces. Each semi precious stone or crystal offers unique properties suitable for widely different types of spell. Choose the most appropriate for your specific goals.
We concentrate here on several of the most useful and commonly available semi precious stones and crystals. Rubies, diamonds and emeralds are fabulous if you can get them, obviously! But you'll have to cast a few preliminary spells before you can afford them, and all the earth's gems are beautiful and precious – remember it is only us humans and the rarity factor that make some gems so much more expensive than others…
Before you use a gem in your magical work it is a great idea to perform a cleansing ritual upon it – such as washing it in spring water, leaving it overnight in the light of the moon, or passing it through a cleansing incense such as Sage. Repeat this cleansing ritual between spells to purify the energy of the stone and keep your intentions very clear for each individual spell's purpose.
Here are six relatively inexpensive stones and crystals to introduce into your spell work, with a description of the energies they are best suited to invoke:
Quartz
Quartz is a pretty and wonderfully affordable crystal, widely available in local gift shops. It comes in many different colours and each has its own special magical power. Choose the stone which suits your purpose best.
Popular types of Quarz crystal include Rose Quartz and smoky quarz. Rose Quarz, in its soft pink hue with a gentle and caressing, loving energy, is especially useful for spells of love and romance. Choose this stone when you are looking to attract a romantic partnership of some kind for yourself or another person. It focusses particularly on the affectionate nature of love, rather than specifically the passionate nature – so pick this stone when you want a true soulmate not just a quick fling. As a stone of love and kindness Rose Quarz is also suitable for friendship or family or general blessing spells – as it radiates an unconditional peaceful warmth.
Smoky Quarz is commonly used for spells of protection, or to ward off the unwanted attentions/interference of others.
I mentioned before that Quarz comes in many different forms, so don't be caught out – Amethyst, citrine, tigers eye, agate,carnelian, and adventurine are all also members of the Quarz family – and each have wonderful qualities worth investigating.
Agate
Agate is a member of the Quartz family,
but just to keep you on your toes, Agate also comes in many different
colours and forms. Tigers Eye and Carnelian are two of the most
common varieties of Agate. For every magical purpose you can imagine
there is the perfect specimen of Agate just waiting to help you.
Amazingly enough you can also sometimes find Agates with bands of
different colours within them – a personalised multi purpose gem,
if you like.

Carnelian
Carnelian, another form of Agate, is a gloriously powerful red or orange stone. It is a fabulous gem to further your career or use with any spell that attempts to realiseyour ambitions. Anyone looking for a new career would be wise to carry a piece of Carnelian with them to job interviews!
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli was prized by the ancient Egyptians as they believed it was a holy stone. This alone makes it very special to me! The stone was also loved by the Romans, who attributed aphrodisiac powers to it...Furthermore Renaissance painters used to ground Lapis Lazuli to a fine powder and use it to create beautiful blue colours in their paintings. So this is a unique and very versatile stone indeed!

Topaz
Topaz is a sweet little stone, appearing once again in a variety of colours. In general it is a great boon for balancing or healing spells. It combines a variety of emotions and energies with an overwhelming calmness and peace. Blue Topaz is particularly associated with contentment, tranquility and mental balance- whilst sunny yellow Topaz brims with friendship, warmth, happiness, and abundance – brilliant for prosperity spells or friendship spells alike.
Onyx
This dark and mysterious black gem is strongely associated with psychic protection. Carry this stone to summon powerful protective forces or to guard or safeguard property/possessions, or to banish bad influences.
Like Lapis Lazuli, Onyx was another stone prized by the Ancient Eygptians, and is often found carved into small pyramids – a geometric shape which amplifies the proctective energies of this mighty stone.
Onyx is connected to the Root Chakra, which means it is beneficial for grounding those suffering from mental illness or imbalance.
Amber
Amber, as you probably know, isn't actually a crystal at all but a resin fossil made from the sap of ancient trees. Sometimes you can find a piece with an insect preserved inside, an especially powerful stone!
Amber is a yellowish- brown colour, sometimes a deep orangey red. It is a shape shifting stone and as such it is especially useful for spells of concealment or where you wish your true intentions to be hidden or altered in some way. Because of it's vivid, firey colour and the fact that resin is flammable, amber is associated with fire and fire magic. It is a stone of power, of energy, of strength and courage – a stone to tear down obstacles in your path and pave your way to success and prosperity. It is a powerful healing stone too, and left under your pillow at night it has the power to stimulate desire or ward off nightmares with its vivid potency.
