The idea of baking a special cake and putting charms in it to glimpse the future dates back centuries.
In Victorian times this ritual was remembered in the act of putting silver charms into the Figgy Pudding – but far far before this it was traditional to slip a plum or two into a rich winter cake; finding a plum in their slice meant an especially lucky year ahead for the fortunate recipient!

Fortune Cake Spell - A special spell for divination
Aim of the magic spell: To discover the most important influences you will face in the coming year.
Ideal Time to cast this magic spell: Yule/The Winter Solstice. (Basically during the Christmas period in general)
Inventory for the magic spell:
175g Self Raising Flour
1 egg
115g brown sugar
115g butter
55g mixed dried fruit
One teaspoon each of Cinnamon and Ginger
12 Baking cases
Wooden spoon and mixing bowl
12 small strips of paper
Aluminium foil
A pen
Casting the magic spell:
This is more of a ritual than a set magic spell – so it is most effective carried out in a relaxed and light-hearted way; you don’t have to cast a circle, but you can if you like. Start out by baking your cakes, as described below; but as you collect your ingredients and stir the mixture keep in mind your intention of finding out the path that your coming year will take.
Allow yourself to meditate and daydream about how wonderful the next twelve months will be and the things you would personally like to achieve.
Fortune Cake Recipe:
- Cream the butter with the sugar and beat until fairly soft and evenly mixed in.
- Now add your flour to the mixture, followed by the egg and dried fruit and
spices.
- Stir well and divide your mixture into 12 cake cases.
Now for the fun part!
Take your 12 small paper strips and write on each one of the following words:
Love, Health, Wealth, Home, Child, Work, Travel, Spirit, Friends, Beginnings, Elders, Time.
Wrap each small paper strip up in tin foil to protect it in the oven. Shuffle the wrapped up tin foil packets well so that you no longer have any idea which is which! Now insert one tin foil packet deep into each small cake.
Bake the cakes at a medium heat for approximately 20 mins, or until cooked through. (You’ll know they’re cooked when a sharp knife inserted comes away clear with no trace of wet mixture on it).
Finally, it’s time to choose a cake!
You may eat them all of course, but the first and second cake you pick should be your first and second most significant life priorities for this year…
